About the Masterclass
This session will talk about the type 2 diabetes, which is a complex metabolic disease that has reached epidemic proportions. Pharmacological management of type 2 diabetes routinely requires complex therapy with multiple medications, and loses its effectiveness over time. New modes of therapy are needed that can target directly the underlying causes of abnormal glucose metabolism. The objective of our research work is to explore a novel, non-pharmacological approach that utilizes the application of ultrasound energy to safely augment insulin release from pancreatic beta cells. Our experiments utilized a preclinical in vitro rodent and human islet models and in vivo murine model and computational modeling of the human abdomen to assess the safety, feasibility, and effectiveness of the proposed therapy. These studies are the first step is assessing the translational potential of low-intensity therapeutic ultrasound as a treatment for the earlier stages of type 2 diabetes.

Vesna Zderic, Professor and Department Chair
Professor Vesna Zderic’s Therapeutic Ultrasound Laboratory conducts modeling and experimental work in the area of ultrasound therapy. Current projects include the application of ultrasound to enhance drug delivery through different biological barriers, studies of safety of therapeutic ultrasound application, and ultrasound application for functional modification of cells and tissues.
